Description

The Eye Care Centre at the Riverside Campus is a multi-faceted centre in ophthalmology with several clinics housed in one location.

Diagnostic Clinics
Ophthalmology technologists perform a number of special procedures, which are used to assist ophthalmologists in detecting and assessing defects in visual function, as well as in preparing the patient for cataract surgery.

The Photography Test deals with photographing the eye. The most common method is called fluorescein angiography, which includes a rapid series of black and white photographs taken at the back of the eye following an intravenous injection of fluorescein dye in the patient's arm or hand. The digital photographs are immediately displayed on a large monitor that can be examined by the retina physician. This test is used to assess retinal circulation in order to detect and assess disease or inflammation of the retina.

The Visual Field Test assesses a patient's peripheral or "side" vision. It involves the random presentation of small spots of light within a large bowl. The resulting map of the patient's side vision permits the detection and localization of defects in the visual pathway from retina and optic nerve to the brain. It also aids the ophthalmologist in the monitoring of treatment, and possible progression, of ocular disease such as glaucoma.

The A-Scan Test is more properly termed "biometry" or the measurement of the shape of the eye. This test is done in preparation for cataract surgery. The curvature of the cornea is measured using a special scope, while the length of the eye is measured using ultrasound. These very precise dimensions are then used to determine the power of the intraocular lens required during cataract surgery.

Treatment Clinics
The Eye Exam Clinic is for regular exams, or exams requested by a family physician or Optometrist who would like an ophthalmologist's consultation for diagnosis or treatment of an eye problem.

The Glaucoma Clinic deals with patients who have increased pressure in the eye.

The Retina Clinic deals with diseases of the retina like diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration.

The Laser Clinic treats eye problems with laser therapy. Examples include iridotomy, to decrease the pressure in the eye, or diabetic retinopathy.

The Oculoplasty Clinic provides plastic surgery to the eyelids or the tear duct.
