Thoracic Surgery Residency Program
The Ottawa Hospital Thoracic Surgery Division, in close affiliation with
the Ottawa Heart Institute, established a successful and well-recognized
Residency Program in Thoracic Surgery in 1983. The success of this program
is due to adequate clinical volume, clinical research, the Oesophageal
Function Laboratory, and dedicated time commitment to weekly multidisciplinary
thoracic oncology rounds, bi-monthly multidisciplinary thoracic surgery-radiology-
pulmonary pathology rounds, weekly thoracic surgery teaching rounds, quarterly
morbidity and mortality rounds, weekly joint cardiothoracic surgery rounds
and regular pneumoclub meetings.
Research and Education
The Ottawa Hospital Division of Thoracic Surgery is heavily committed
to clinical research and education of patients,
undergraduate medical students and postgraduate surgical residents.
With the assistance of Surgical Nurse educators, clinical pathways have
been prepared for appropriate care of the patients. The surgical
clerkship has been coordinated through the Division of Thoracic Surgery
since 1983. The surgical residents rotating in Thoracic Surgery are assigned
clinical research projects. The Division of Thoracic Surgery actively
participates in the clinical trials conducted by the National Cancer Institute
of Canada.
