Family Practice
Welcome to The Ottawa Hospital Department of Family Practice. Dr. Philip Karas is the
Medical Director for the Department of Family Practice.
Our Administration office is located at The Ottawa Hospital - General Campus, Room 2005E, 501 Smyth Road, Ottawa ON K1H 1L6.
About Us
The Ottawa Hospital Department of Family Practice was created in 1998
by the merger of the Departments of Family Medicine of the Riverside,
General, Civic, and Grace Hospitals as part of the HSRC directed restructuring
of Ottawa’s hospitals. Members of the department work at all three
TOH campuses providing inpatient and outpatient services.
The department is closely affiliated with the University of Ottawa Department of Family
Medicine residency program both in the community and in the hospital.
For more information regarding the residency program, please visit www.familymedicine.uottawa.ca.
Civic Campus
Dr. Barry Englehardt is the Medical Director of the Academic Family Health Team at the Civic Campus and
Assistant Professor with the University of Ottawa Department of Family
Medicine.
The Civic Campus is home to the Academic Family Health Team at The Ottawa
Hospital. Here, family physicians work with residents, medical students,
nurses and nurse practitioners as well as allied health professionals
including dieticians and social workers in a primary care environment
that has recently become a Family Health Network.
Patients are seen by appointment during regular office hours as well as extended hours for
urgent situations. Patients are also followed through the Civic Emergency
and for inpatient admissions. For more information regarding the Academic Family Health Team - Civic Campus,
please visit www.ottawahospital.on.ca/patient/visit/clinics/family-e.asp.
There are two call groups at the Civic Campus: Teaching Family Medicine
(TFM) and Community Family Medicine (CFM). TFM works with the residents
to take care of their patients in hospital. CFM is a group of community
family physicians who admit and care for their own patients in hospital.
CFM is also involved in patient care with the Rehabilitation Floor.
Members of the department also provide care for the Awaiting Long-term
Care for patients awaiting placement into nursing homes. Other members of the Department of Family Practice work closely with
other departments to provide excellent patient care as consultants, clinical
assistants and surgical assistants.
